Vance County, North Carolina rests along the shores of shimmering Kerr Lake. Originally included in the state of Virginia, King Charles II later redrew the state lines declaring Vance County part of North Carolina. Zebulon Baird Vance, former NC governor and U.S. Senator, inspired the county's name.

Vance County features Kerr Lake, North Carolina's largest body of water, with over 850 miles of scenic shoreline that stretch northward over the Virginia border. Flood control was the lake's initial purpose; however, its captivating beauty transformed it into a major tourist attraction for the area. Kerr Lake offers myriad recreational activities such as boating, camping, fishing, sailing, skiing, wind surfing and a natural habitat sure to please the avid outdoorsman. Vance County marinas offer access to all the amenities necessary for a day on the water. In addition, Fox Pond Park and Aycock Recreational Complex provide year round access to athletic facilities, an amphitheater, nature trails and an abundance of outdoor activities.

Vance County offers an excellent quality of life complemented by a low crime rate and a moderate climate. January's temperature averages 36 degrees, with an average of 77 degrees in July. In addition, reasonably priced homes are available in a variety of communities, such as the historical and waterfront districts.

The school district consists of fourteen public schools, two private schools and one charter school. Vance-Granville Community College is the closest higher learning facility; however, several fine choices nearby include North Carolina State University, Meredith College and Shaw University, in Raleigh and Duke University and North Carolina Central University in Durham.

Nearly 43,000 residents and eight townships comprise Vance County, with Henderson serving as the county seat. Other major towns are Kittrell, Manson, Middleburg and Townsville. Henderson boasts a downtown shopping district designated as a North Carolina Main Street city and several listings on the National Register for Historic Places. Sites include Pool Rock Plantation, the Henderson Central Business Historic District and the Vance County Courthouse. Initially, Henderson flourished under the cotton, textile and tobacco industries; however, the retail sector, which has seen a 70 percent hike in recent years, has become a leading contributor to the local economy. The Research Triangle Park and Vance County Development Commission provide resources and support to help ensure success in the local business community. Currently, the manufacturing industries employ a third of the workforce, with nearly 950 fine business establishments thriving in Vance County.
