Incorporated in 1861, Oxford
serves as the seat to
Granville
County. Located in the lush rolling hills of Carolina's
upper
Piedmont
Region, most of Granville County is rural agricultural
land. Originally, this had been plantation country, and many
splendid plantation manor houses still remain. The region's
excellent location, however, is attracting many industries to
the area. Situated north of the dynamic
Research
Triangle, Interstate 85 provides swift access to the
bustling cities of
Durham,
Raleigh
and
Chapel
Hill.
Oxford is the main site for
incoming firms. Some of the corporations found here are the
Santa
Fe Natural Tobacco Company,
Revlon,
Inc.,

Ingenuity and
Bandag
Inc. The
Granville
Economic Development Commission aids businesses in
locating in Oxford. Individual
incentive
programs are tailor-made for each firm. Oxford townspeople
hold a reputation for strong work ethics and conscientious
behavior. Five miles north of Oxford is the
Vance
Granville Community College, which works with local
industries to give residents free training to suit companies'
individual needs. Fourteen other
colleges
and universities lie within a short commute.
Historic
Downtown
Oxford is also attracting new businesses. While preserving
the picturesque beauty of the Downtown area, city planners
welcome new retail shops and specialty boutiques. Oxford is
the center of shopping and dining for all of Granville County,
and the quaint ambience of the town attracts shoppers wanting
to escape the bustling cities.
Oxford maintains a sense of
strong family values. Children have access to four lovely
athletic parks, including one skate park. Numerous volleyball
and tennis courts are here, and a field each for soccer,
baseball and football. The Granville County
public
school system consistently receives commendations for
providing some of the best rural education in
North
Carolina. The Oxford
Parks
and Recreation Department holds numerous
special
events that the whole family can enjoy. Oxford's
population of 8,338, (Census 2000 data), shows great pride in
their town, as seen by the amount of
civic
organizations found here, and the scrupulous upkeep of
their homes.
