Founder, William Churton, chose to build this fine community on the hilly countryside where the Great Indian Trading Path crossed the Eno River. After going through several name changes, Hillsborough eventually settled on its current name, in honor of William Hill, the Earl of Hillsborough.

Hillsborough Hog Days, the "Last Fridays" events, the Occaneechi Saponi Spring Pow Wow Festival and Walkable Hillsborough Day draw this close knit community together throughout the year. Visitors enjoy their access to Montrose Gardens, Orange County Historical Museum as well as the abundance of other activities offered at Triangle Sportsplex and Hillsborough's developed parks.

Hillsborough. NC boasts a low unemployment rate and a thriving economy, with the retail sector serving as the primary industry. Employers such as Sports Endeavors and General Electric provide a large portion of the area's workforce with jobs. Tremendous amounts of commercial space are currently available in Hillsborough due to recent construction projects. The Orange County Development Commission offers incentives encouraging new and established businesses to utilize this space as well as the many other locations in Hillsborough. Citizens also have the benefit of its close proximity to Research Triangle Park, where academic, industry and government leaders collaborate with the common goal of creating quality jobs and economic opportunities in the region.

Orange County Schools, Hillsborough's top-notch public school system, serves over 6,000 students through its seven elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools. Recently, Cedar Ridge High School proudly gained approval to begin an International Baccalaureate program. Orange County has several institutes for higher learning within driving distance, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Durham Technical Community College and Alamance Community College in Haw River. Additionally, a number of fine learning facilities are located in nearby Raleigh and Durham. These include Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Meredith College and North Carolina State University.

In the late 1700's, Hillsborough held North Carolina's Constitutional Convention where the Bill of Rights officially became a part of the U.S. Constitution. Once the center of politics during the Revolutionary War, Hillsborough currently serves as the seat of Orange County. With its nearly 5,500 residents, (Census 2000 data), Hillsborough nestles between the Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem Triad and the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle. In addition, its location at the merger of Interstate 85 and Interstate 40 makes Hillsborough easily accessible to all of North Carolina.
